Soho Theatre On Demand

This 1 hour special was filmed in August 2020 in response to the death of George Floyd, telling the story of Black British ex-serviceman Christopher Alder who died in police custody. It stars Richard Blackwood and is directed by Anastasia Osei-Kuffour. It was based on the one-man stage play which featured sound design by Duramaney Kamara. I created additional sound design for this version, worked as sound recordist, and edited and mixed the film.

“an immersive sound design by Gareth Fry:” The Stage

“Gareth Fry’s sound design is as phenomenal as ever, both nurturing the play while also driving the narrative on where needed.” London Theatre 1

“Sound design by Gareth Fry was truly the star of the show. Fry creates a deep, omnipresent and overwhelming (in all the right ways) soundscape which perfectly underscores the drama and heightens the already high stakes of hospital life.” Pocket Size Theatre

Adult Children

Set during lockdown, and staged in a scanned replica of the Donmar Warehouse theatre auditorium, this poignant short 360 film invites us to explore the ways in which our actions are tangentially connected even when we are apart. Adult Children is a unique collaboration between leading theatre artists and groundbreaking XR creatives. Combining their talents, playwright Ella Hickson, XR/theatre director Sacha Wares and digital innovators ScanLAB Projects have created a new form of 360 theatre that explores the psychogeography of solitude, probes the nuances of social responsibility and evokes the feelings of loss that characterise the COVID-19 era for us all.

Shifts

** winner of an Audio Production 2021 award **

Shifts is available to listen to on BBC Sounds here.

In Shifts, we hear from a paramedic, several ICU nurses, a mental health nurse, a retired matron and a perfusionist. They were interviewed during lockdown on Zoom calls, on mobile phones and in gardens with microphones on long poles. They were asked about their experience of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we heard how it had changed them and shifted their ideas about nursing and frontline healthcare.

In response, writer Stephanie Jacob listened to these interviews and wrote the poetry sequence Shifts. The healthcare workers themselves read some of the poems along with actors Caroline Catz, Anni Domingo and Siobhan McSweeney. Extracts from the original interviews are featured throughout the programme. The soundscape is designed by award-winning designer Gareth Fry and features music by Arcade Fire's Richard Reed Parry.
